What we look at in a betting site review

Bookmakers are easier to compare than casinos, because the product is a price. Over a season, the difference between a sportsbook that consistently prices a market at 1.90 and one that prices it at 1.95 outweighs any free bet either of them offers. Our betting reviews therefore start with pricing, then look at what surrounds it: how quickly winnings are paid, what the promotions actually require, and whether the account gets restricted the moment it becomes profitable.

Every review follows the same structure — a quick facts table with the welcome offer, minimum deposit and withdrawal timings, with conditions printed under each figure, then the strengths, the things worth knowing, and a verdict on who the book suits.

How we rate betting sites

Each sportsbook is scored out of five against the same weighted criteria used across our reviews, set out in full on our how we rate page.

Payouts and banking carry 30%. How quickly settled winnings reach your account, which withdrawal methods are supported, and whether stated times match observed ones. We also note how quickly markets are settled after an event finishes, since an unsettled bet is money you cannot use.

Offer quality is 25%. Free bet offers are usually quoted at their headline value and rarely worth it. We read the qualifying odds, whether the stake is returned on the free bet, the expiry window, and any minimum odds attached to using it.

Product and platform is 20%, covering market depth, in-play coverage, cash-out behaviour, and whether the app is usable at speed during a live event.

Licensing and conduct is 15%, and support and safer gambling tools is 10%.

Odds, margin and why they matter more than offers

Every bookmaker builds a margin into its prices. On a two-way market it is the amount by which the implied probabilities exceed 100%. A book operating at 102% is returning more to customers than one at 108%, and across a season of regular betting that gap dwarfs a one-off free bet.

Margins vary by sport and by market within a sport. A book can be competitive on Premier League match odds and poor on lower-league corners, or strong on horse racing win markets and expensive on each-way terms. We look at where a book is genuinely competitive rather than reporting a single figure, and note best-odds-guaranteed availability on racing, which is worth more than most sign-up offers to anyone who bets on horses regularly.

Free bets and promotions

A typical welcome offer requires a qualifying bet at minimum odds, returns the winnings but not the stake, and expires within days. Read the qualifying odds first: a 'bet £10 get £30' offer requiring odds of 1.5 or greater is a different proposition from one requiring 2.0. Where the stake is not returned, a £10 free bet at evens returns £10, not £20.

Ongoing promotions matter more than the sign-up for anyone who bets regularly. Acca insurance, price boosts, best odds guaranteed and extra places on racing are the ones that accumulate value. We note whether promotions apply to your whole account or only to selected customers, and whether taking them triggers stake restrictions.

Account restrictions

Bookmakers restrict stakes on customers they judge unprofitable, and there is no regulatory requirement to explain it. This is the single most common complaint from experienced bettors. We record what we can observe and what the operator's terms say, because a book with excellent prices you are not permitted to bet into is worth less than a slightly worse one that leaves your account alone.

In-play, cash out and settlement

Most betting now happens during the event rather than before it, which puts weight on things a pre-match comparison misses. We look at how many markets stay open in play, how long the book suspends after a goal or a wicket, and whether prices are refreshed fast enough to bet at speed without constant rejections.

Cash out is offered almost everywhere and priced differently everywhere. The value returned is always below the true worth of the position — that margin is how the feature makes money — but the size of the deduction varies considerably between books. Partial cash out and auto cash out are worth having if you use the feature regularly.

Settlement speed matters more than it sounds. A book that settles football within minutes of the whistle and one that takes an hour are offering materially different products if you are recycling stakes across a Saturday afternoon.

Racing, market depth and each-way terms

For anyone betting on horses, three things decide whether an account is worth holding: best odds guaranteed, each-way terms, and whether extra places are offered on competitive handicaps. Best odds guaranteed pays the starting price if it drifts above the price you took, and over a year it is worth more than any welcome offer. Each-way terms vary by field size and by book, and a fifth of the odds rather than a quarter on the same race is a meaningful difference.

Beyond the headline sports, market depth separates books quickly. We check whether coverage extends past the major leagues into lower divisions, women's competitions, and the sports that get thin treatment elsewhere — darts, snooker, cycling, and the smaller American college markets. A book that prices everything at a wide margin is not really offering depth.

Apps and usability

A betting app is used under time pressure, often in a crowded place on a poor connection. We look at how quickly the bet slip loads, whether the app holds your selections through a connection drop, how many taps it takes to place a repeat bet, and whether live scores and streaming are available without a separate login. Streaming usually requires a funded account or a bet placed in the previous twenty-four hours, and the terms differ by sport.

Payments and verification

Credit cards cannot be used for betting in Great Britain. Identity verification is required before withdrawal, and licensed operators must handle essential checks at registration. We record minimum withdrawal amounts, whether funds return to the depositing method, and any pending period during which a withdrawal can be reversed back into your balance.

Only licensed operators

Every operator on this page holds a licence from the Gambling Commission to offer services to customers in Great Britain. We do not review unlicensed sites, and we do not link to them. That is not a stylistic preference: an unlicensed operator is outside the dispute resolution system, outside the deposit limit and self-exclusion requirements, and outside GAMSTOP. If something goes wrong with your money, there is nobody to escalate to.

Gambling should cost you what you decided it would

Every licensed operator must offer deposit limits, loss limits, reality checks, time-outs and self-exclusion. Set them when you open the account rather than when you need them. If you cannot find those tools within a couple of clicks, treat it as a mark against the site.
