The races worth following today

There are 40 races across 5 British and Irish meetings today, at Brighton, Curragh, Fontwell, Perth, Southwell (AW). The card below is ordered by course; what follows picks out the races and the horses the money is on.

The DNG Nationwide Handicap at Curragh is the richest race of the day at €21,000, which is usually where the best horses and the biggest fields are, and where the market is most reliable.

Today’s favourites

The shortest price on the card is Kabral du Mathan at 0.26/1 in the 1:25 at Perth. A short price is the market’s opinion rather than a guarantee: favourites win roughly a third of British races, which means two in three are beaten.

How to read the prices on this page

Divide 100 by the decimal price to get the chance it implies: 8/15 is 1.53 and a 65% chance, 5/4 is 2.25 and 44%, 7/4 is 2.75 and 36%, 4/1 is 5.00 and 20%, 10/1 is 11.00 and 9%.

Every runner shows the best price among the bookmakers we review, and who is offering it. The difference between the best price and the worst is real money: taking 11/2 rather than 5/1 returns 10 per cent more profit on a winning bet, every time.

Why exchange prices are not here

An exchange price is nearly always the biggest number on the board, but commission is charged on winnings and the price is what another punter will lay rather than what a bookmaker will pay, so putting it beside fixed odds is not a fair comparison.

For the sites themselves — which pay best odds guaranteed, which settle fastest, and what the welcome offers are actually worth — see our guide to UK horse racing betting sites.

18+ Prices move constantly and a price shown here may have gone by the time you reach the bookmaker. Gambling should be entertainment with a cost you are content to pay, not a way to make money. GambleAware.org

Is the price worth taking?

A price is a statement about how likely something is. Put your own figure against a runner and this works out the price that would make it a fair bet, and what the market is offering instead. It does not tell you what will win — that part is yours.

Runner Best price Implied Margin removed Your figure Fair price Against the market

An edge on paper is not a winning bet. It says that if your figure were right and the race were run many times, the price would pay more than it should — which tells you nothing about this afternoon. Prices move, and the tool runs in your browser without sending or storing anything.

Bet calculator

Works out what any bet returns before you place it, and what a settled one paid. Singles through eight-folds, every full-cover bet from a Trixie to a Goliath, each-way at any place terms, and Rule 4 when a runner is withdrawn.

Mark each selection won, placed, lost or a non-runner, so a bet that has already run can be checked as well as one you are thinking about. A non-runner settles at no odds and shortens every line it appears in, exactly as a bookmaker would settle it.

Choose a race and each selection can be picked from its runners, at the best price we have.

Total stake £0.00
Total return £0.00
Profit or loss £0.00
Number of bets 0

A worked example

A £1 Yankee on four winners at 2/1 is eleven bets — six doubles, four trebles and a four-fold. It costs £11 and returns £243, a profit of £232. Mark one of the four a non-runner and it settles as £117: the doubles containing it become singles, the trebles become doubles, and the four-fold becomes a treble.

Odds can be typed as 5/2, 2.5 or evens. Nothing is sent anywhere: the calculator runs in your browser and stores nothing. Estimates only — confirm returns with your bookmaker before betting.

Racing words you will meet on this page

SP — starting price
The price a horse is returned at when the race goes off, set from the on-course market. Take a price earlier and you keep it; bet at SP and you get whatever it is at the off.
Best odds guaranteed
If you take an early price and the SP is bigger, the bookmaker pays the bigger one. Over a year this is worth more to a regular punter than any welcome offer.
Each-way
Two bets of equal stake: one that the horse wins, one that it places. The place part pays a fraction of the odds, usually a fifth or a quarter.
Going
The state of the ground, from hard through firm, good and soft to heavy. Some horses are far better on one than another.
Handicap
A race where the weights are set by official rating, so in theory every runner has an equal chance. Most British racing is handicaps.
Class
How good a race is, from Class 1 at the top to Class 7. A Class 2 handicap is a considerably better contest than a Class 5.
Official rating
A number given to a horse by the handicapper, based on its form. It decides the weight it carries in a handicap.
Draw
The stall a horse starts from on the flat. On some tracks and distances a low or high draw is a real advantage.
Furlong
An eighth of a mile, 220 yards. Distances are written as miles and furlongs, so 1m 2f is a mile and a quarter.
Rule 4
When a horse is withdrawn late, bookmakers deduct an amount from the winnings on bets already placed. It is set by the withdrawn horse’s price and applies to winnings, not your stake.
Non-runner
A declared horse that does not run. Win bets are refunded; in a multiple that leg settles at no odds and the bet reduces.
Odds-on
A price shorter than evens, where you stake more than you stand to win. The market rates the horse better than a 50% chance.
Ante-post
A bet placed well before the race at bigger prices, with the risk that your stake is lost if the horse does not run.
Nap
A tipster’s strongest selection of the day. Nothing to do with the price.

The bets you can place at a UK bookmaker

Win

One horse, to win. The simplest bet and, on a short-priced favourite, often the best value one.

Each-way

Two bets: win and place. Worth more on a bigger price in a large field than on a favourite in a small one.

Forecast

Two horses, to finish first and second in that order. A reverse forecast covers both orders and costs two bets.

Tricast

Three horses, first, second and third in order. Only offered on handicaps with enough runners.

Double, treble, accumulator

Two, three or more horses, all of which must win. The odds multiply, and so does the chance of one leg letting you down.

Trixie, Yankee, Heinz

Full-cover bets without singles. A Yankee is four selections across six doubles, four trebles and a four-fold — eleven bets, so a £1 Yankee costs £11.

Patent, Lucky 15, Lucky 31

The same, with the singles included. One winner is enough to get something back, which is why they are the most popular bets in a British betting shop.

Placepot

A Tote pool: pick a horse to place in each of the first six races at a meeting. Cheap to enter, hard to win, and the return is a share of the pool rather than a price.

Ante-post

Placed weeks or months out on a big race, at prices you will not see on the day.

Every one of these can be worked out on the calculator above.

Five questions about betting on today’s racing

What time is the first race today?

The first off today is the 12:55 at Perth. Every meeting is listed in time order on the card above. British cards usually start between 1pm and 2pm, with evening meetings from about 5pm in the summer.

How do I find the best price on a runner?

Every runner on this page shows the best price among the bookmakers we review, and which firm is offering it. The difference is real money: taking 7/2 rather than 3/1 is 17 per cent more profit on a winning bet.

What does best odds guaranteed mean, and who offers it?

If the starting price is bigger than the price you took, the bookmaker pays the bigger one. Most major British firms offer it on UK and Irish racing, usually from the morning of the race. It is worth more over a season than any sign-up offer, and it is one of the first things we check in a review.

What happens if my horse does not run?

A win single is refunded in full. In a multiple the non-runner settles at no odds and the bet reduces, so a four-fold becomes a treble. If a fancied horse is withdrawn late, Rule 4 may reduce the winnings on bets already struck on the others.

Is the favourite worth backing?

Favourites win about a third of British races, which means two in three are beaten. A price is the market’s opinion rather than a forecast, and the value checker on this page exists so you can put your own figure against it.
